What is Qian Tu Pai?

The name means Heaven and Earth Association. This system combines Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts into one system. It combines both Aiki Jujutsu and Chuan Fa (Kung Fu) empty hand systems along with Tai Chi, Escrima and Hapkido weapons systems. It is not a sport-oriented martial art but focuses on self-defense and self-control.

Aiki Jujutsu; This art is a combination of Aiki Jujutsu systems. It borrows its theory from Shiho Karano Ryu Jujutsu and Aikido but has developed its syllabus from these arts and the much more extensive Hapkido Syllabus. Each of these Aiki systems were derived from Master Takeda who founded Daiato Ryu Aiki Jujutsu. As noted under the history section the Korean branch, Hapkido (Chosen Aiki Jutsu) is probably closest to the original system of Diato Ryu Aiki Jutsu. The name is confusing since the Chinese characters used in the name are identical to the Japanese name Aikido. Yong Sul Choi who brought Diato Ryu to Korea learned it directly from Takeda, being one of his personal servants since 9 years old, making him a student at the same time as Ueshiba who founded Aikido. Hapkido has a very large syllabus of techniques that numbers in the thousands of techniques like the original system with less of the theory being taught to students. The system has been somewhat adapted to the Korean culture and Sijo Kulp prefers to use the name Chosen Aiki Jutsu. The original first degree black belt syllabus required the student to learn 360 techniques compared the 100-150 or so in Aikido. The shear volume of techniques left little time to focus on theory where the short syllabus is designed for more of a theoretical approach. The short syllabus of either Aikido or Shiho Karano Ryu neglects the wide variety of attacks the practitioner is apt to encounter and the wide variety of entries into the larger list of techniques available in Chosen AikiJutsu. By combining the shorter Aiki systems and adding the Chen style blocks and sticky hands and Chinese techniques, the students of Qian Tu Pai can take advantage of the theory and flow of the theoretical systems and the larger syllabus of the Hapkido system.

Chuan Fa; This art borrows its theory from Chen Family Tai Chi Chuan and Bagua Zhang. It borrows its methods from these styles as well as Long Fist and Southern Five Families. Ueshiba stated that 70% of the technique is the Atemi. Atemi is vital point striking. The Chinese have developed a highly involved method of striking called Dian Mai (Dim Mak in Cantonese) that is taught in Chen Style Tai Chi Quan. Instead of utilizing the extensive amount of Karate type kicking and Punching techniques used in Korea the Qian Tu Pai system uses a Dian Mai system of Atemi which is well suited for both the Chen applications and practicing the Aikijutsu entries. Dian Mai coupled with the "silk cocoon reeling" power generation methods of Chen style provides a good foundation for internal style boxing. Bagua's circular maneuvering methods provide a smooth transition between boxing and the circular movements of Aikido.

Weapons; We teach the classical weapon routines of Chen Tai Chi Chuan and some weapons of other wu kung fu systems. For self-defense we focus on the use of techniques from Escrima and other stick type weapons that are adaptable to items readily available and legal in our culture. We also teach counter knife and gun disarming techniques.

Participation; Due to the nature of this art, this Association reserves the right to select who we want to train. We also reserve the right to dismiss students who demonstrate what we consider to be poor behavior or poor judgment. Students must be attending regular classes to participate in weapons classes.
